Adam Symons

Adam Symons

I’m a creative, analytical and commercial product leader, based in Paris. I thrive in the all-in cauldron of high-growth startups. The companies I value have low-ego, high EQ working environments where talented, ambitious people produce things far greater than the sum of their parts. I have high standards but always push for 80/20 solutions, and I’m comfortable being uncomfortable. I believe every day is an opportunity to have fun, and an opportunity to learn. My eyes are open for contract roles (interim, fractional or project-based) on projects and teams that inspire me. I’m free from 20th November.

Experience

After starting my career as a strategist in advertising, I’ve spent the last 10+ years in product leadership roles in high-growth startups. Over that time I’ve worn multiple hats as a founder, early stage employee, contractor, investor and, most recently, as a consultant. I’ve consistently been told by my teammates and clients that I’ve had a big impact, while growing immeasurably and building rewarding relationships along the way.

Product lead [Project-based], Elsewhen

September 2023 - 17th November 2023

I’m working with product consultancy, Elsewhen, on a fixed-term project for a global product with >500m MAUs. Details under NDA 🤐

Strategy consultant [Project-based], Five Lives

August 2023 - Sept 2023

Five Lives exists to help people live the life they want, for longer, by building brain-healthy habits. I led a company-wide, highly collaborative process to reset their value proposition, north star metric and product strategy.

🔥 See highlights
  • Five Lives is a grade 1 medical device that helps people understand their pre-disposition to dementia, and take action to reduce it. Huge problem, noble mission. But the strategy and execution had become a little… fuzzy over time.
  • Produced a company-wide audit, which included interviewing everyone in the company, deep UX analysis and commercial assessment, which identified several key issues to be addressed.
  • Led a series of presentations and cross-functional workshops to help the company re-find its raison d’être, make sense of the science, articulate their value proposition and manifesto, lock down their product strategy, assign the jobs to be done across the wider team and reset working culture.

Strategy consultant [Project-based], Epoq legal

May 2023 - Sept 2023

Over several projects, I helped align the leadership team around a 2 year product strategy, leveraging AI where it was additive to do so.

🔥 See highlights
  • AI is on the cusp of turning the legal industry on its head, but if not leveraged in the optimal way can be a siren, luring you on the rocks. For Epoq, the UK’s largest online legal document drafting service, being on the right side of this divide was mission critical.
  • Ran detailed stakeholder interviews to deeply understand the company objectives, opportunities and shortcomings.
  • Produced a critical analysis of a number of potential B2B product strategies, including market research, commercial modelling and impact analysis.
  • Aligned the leadership team on what use of their resources was most likely to help them achieve their goals, and, crucially, what wasn’t. Agreeing what NOT to do is a key part of effectively focusing - few things waste more calories and distract the mind than ongoing indecision.

Interim Head of Product [Contract], Fixter (acq. by Renault)

Feb 2022 - May 2023

In my second contract at Fixter, I’ve been focused on building a product team, culture and roadmap that drives growth.

🔥 See highlights
  • Back to (growth) basics: a big part of my role has been to help the company establish a clear North Star Metric and an unambiguous view on growth. With this central trunk in place we’ve been able to build branches for each team’s OKRs, so everyone’s rowing in the same direction.
  • Off the back of this, structured clear OKRs and a skeletal roadmap, and ring-fenced autonomy for the product team to move the needles in the way they see fit.
  • Primary Q3/4 ‘22 OKR was conversion rate, and I guided a +85% global uplift (measured through cumulative impact of a/b tests).
  • Spearheaded a complex Contentful overhaul of all landing pages (200k+, across 2 languages), giving the product, growth and design team full control of every aspect of the experience. Early days, but the conversion rate fruit is starting to bear.
  • Led a lightweight ‘brand refresh’ project to move us from stock images of 11 men on the homepage to a diverse, human representation of our customers, drivers, garages and team.
  • Defined a Brilliant Basics Score, made up up 8 individual metrics to decode the quality of service we provide to our customers, and make working to improve it structured and tangible.
  • I’ve been an additive (I hope!) mentor for 2 PMs and 1 PD, helping them multiply their impact and personal growth.

Head of Product, Heights

Mar 2020 — Dec 2021

Heights is building the braincare category, backed by Forward Partners and Deciem co-founder ($2.2bn exit). As employee #1, I played a foundational role in our hiring, culture, standards, process, product and growth (£16k to £200k+ MRR).

🔥 See highlights

  • Redesigned and rebuilt the full e-comm, customer portal, CRM and blog experience, going headless (Gatsby, Contentful) to create the infrastructure that enabled maximum flexibility and agility for rapid experimentation
  • Pivotal in instilling a user-centric learning culture across every touchpoint (incl regular user research, a customer community and cs ticket, review, competitor and PMF analyses) that guided most of our decision-making
  • Built Heights for Slack, and reachmyheights.com as standalone experiences to make braincare simple for a wide audience, led our comprehensive Metabase BI setup
  • Built a product team of A+ players across product, engineering, design and research, only hiring people who raise the average standard of the team (increasingly hard!)

Current role: Senior PM, Heights

I can say with absolute certainty that Adam is one of the most talented, hardworking, and hilarious colleagues I have ever had the pleasure of working with - working with him was one of the highlights of my entire career.

Adam is a force to be reckoned with - he's inspiring, empowering, driven, analytical, meticulous, and kind. He approaches every problem with laser focus and is always finding creative solutions to drive maximal impact, all while making sure we have a good time along the way thanks to his infectious energy.

His deep knowledge of the startup space in both product and growth is unmatched, and his strategic thinking and attention to detail are invaluable on any project. And when it comes to mentorship, Adam is truly in a league of his own. He has high standards, low ego, and asks hard questions that help you learn everyday. As my manager, he not only made me a better product manager, but also helped me grow as a person.

The MVP no matter what team he's in, he is an all-around rockstar.

Context: Dan hired me as employee #1

Current roles: Co-founder, Heights. Podcast host, Secret leaders. Co-founder, Foundrs

Adam particularly excels in 3 things:

  1. Team motivator. He always brought the level of quality and expectations in the team up, leading from the front, identifying his own strengths and weaknesses as a way to motivate others to do better too.
  2. Critical thinking. Adam doesn't like to waste time so he spends the right amount thinking and assessing about what work really needs to be done in what priority and once that's settled, he runs at it fast. This is a superpower.
  3. Feedback. He's direct and expects direct feedback too, all in pursuit of being the best head of product and building the best product he can, that's something he takes great pride in and it lifts the quality of those around him and the delivery of the product too.

All round, Adam is an asset to any product team.

PS he's also very funny but that's just a bonus.

I miss working with Adam — seriously, he brings a sense of joy and enthusiasm to the workplace that makes work, well, not feel like work! He's an exceptional product leader and tops my list of people I'd want on my team.

Adam's product sense is spot-on. He has a knack for breaking down complex problems, prioritising them, and intuitively getting to the heart of what customers want and need. He effortlessly combines deep empathy for customers with the needs of the business to develop solid product strategies that succeed. But Adam is not just a visionary — he's also an execution powerhouse. No matter the challenge, I've always seen Adam rise to it and deliver with finesse.

What sets Adam apart is his high EQ and low ego — he's an awesome mentor, always helping his team grow to their full potential but is equally open to learn from his team. His guidance and support have been invaluable to me and many others.

Finally, Adam is truly one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. If you have the chance, go meet him! You won't be disappointed.

Adam is a triple-A product person, strategist, and all-round lovely human being.

Whip-smart, articulate, and grounded; he has a remarkable ability to understand and cut to the heart of extremely complicated problems.

Adam is also an incredible mentor and leader. Allergic to ego, he knows how to inspire, push, and pull a team to exceed their potential. His natural stoicism, deep commitment to honesty and integrity, and relentless positivity during even the stormiest moments, always earns the respect of those around him.

An exceptional communicator and copywriter, he's highly meticulous with strong design sensibilities — yet his unrelenting focus on prioritisation means he's always stepping back and looking at the bigger picture.

And if that weren't enough, he's incredibly kindhearted, funny, and charismatic.
